On March 5th, 2024, Maine's House of Representatives voted to pass the National Popular Vote compact, which would force Maine's 4 electoral votes to vote for whichever Presidential candidate gets the most popular votes nation-wide, regardless of who the majority of Mainers vote for in the presidential election.
This bill - LD 1578 An Act to Adopt an Interstate Compact to Elect the President of the United States by National Popular Vote - was sponsored and introduced by Representative Arthur L Bell.

The Electoral College's purpose is to give the voters of each state their own National Representatives in Presidential elections, so that the voters of their state may have some impact in the election. By removing the Electoral College in Maine, the votes of Maine's citizens no longer matter; because California and New York can now out-vote them by pure numbers. Essentially, if this passes Maine's Senate - and gets passed by the Governor - would dissolve every Mainer's impact on the national level when it comes to elections.
