Marcelino Morales Sanchez, 49 |
Last Friday - 1/26/2024 - Marcelino Morales Sanchez was arrested and charged with attempted 1st-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury, and discharging a weapon into occupied property; states the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office.
Marcelino Sanchez had fired his weapon on River Road near Jabbertown, striking a driver who was driving down that road. The driver, after being struck with the bullet, had continued to Dosher Cutoff and then headed into town to the Southport Fire Department HQ on Howe Street, immediately after seeing that there were no police at the Police Department when he initially stopped there.
Southport Police Chief Todd Coring had this to say about the incident.
"From what I saw, he had a gunshot wound to the hand. There was several bullet holes in the victim's car. The victim had came through a side door at the fire headquarters screaming for help. A medic, ambulance crew of 2 people and 2 firefighters were at the station at the time."
"Our firefighters immediately started rendering aid to him, and when he told them someone was following him and shooting at him in his vehicle, the building went into lockdown mode", said Southport Fire Chef Charles Drew. "The victim had a handgun with him that was secured until police arrived on the scene".
Marcelino Morales Sanchez is being held in the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office with no bond.
"I'm going into my sixth year as police chief and I can count on one hand the number of shots fired in Southport", Police Chief Todd Coring said. "I would say it's kind of rare for Southport, but with the type of violence we're seeing everywhere, it is not a surprise. More people are carrying guns".
