On 2/1/2021 at around 5:00pm, there was a shooting at the inside of the University Mall in South Burlington near Gamestop. The South Burlington Police Chief, Shawn Burke, had said that the shooter had shot an innocent bystandard - hitting him with shrapnel - sending him to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The Mall had been blocked off until around 8:30pm as the police investigated the area. Some Mall shoppers said that they were forced to shelter in place for hours because of the shooting.
"The staff all gathered people to make sure we were safe and barricaded, but we just hid and waited to see the police and know that we were safe", said Carolyn Geraci.
"We heard alot of things that could've been just rumors, like that there was a hostage, that they shot the shooter. We didn't even know it was a shooter at first", Celia McClintock said.
The mall shooter ended up being Tyshane Smith, who was ~18 at the time of his shooting; even though one of the articles I am using as a source have their article titled "Teen Accused in University Mall Shooting to be tried as an adult". Tyshane Smith was later found and arrested in Florida for the crime.
The Mall Shooting case was sent to family court, out of the public's eye, but a judge ruled that the case must go back to the criminal court.
Tyshane Smith faced charges of aggravated assault.
The victim of the Mall Shooting was Cooper Bergeron, 19.
Police said, at the time of the incident, that Tyshane Smith and Dakota Beams, 22, were in connection with the crime. As of this article, Dakota Beams fled the scene and was still wanted by the Police for questioning. The Police also said that the shooting may have resulted from a drug deal.
At the time of the Mall shooting, it turns out that Tyshane Smith was on probation as well.
