A former Senior Information Technology Specialist who worked at the Middlebury College, Vermont, was sentenced to an 80 month prison term (6.666 years) and 14 years of supervised release (or longer) for being convicted for receiving Child Sexual Abuse Materials (CSAM).
Scott Remick, 48, of Shoreham Vermont, was sentenced this Thursday (2/22/2024) in the District Court of Burlington.
Assistant U.S Atttorney Barbary Masterson had maintained that Remick was a significant offender.
Homeland Security Investigator Special Agent Michael McCullagh said that more than 1,000 images of child sexual abuse materials was found in the thumbcache/thumbdrive, and more than 200,000 images of child erotica/age-difficult images were saved to Remick's computer.
The investigation into Scott Remick started on June 16, 2021, when - according to the federal prosecutors - "a source of information identified a computer with a security vulnerability". The source was described by officials as part of a group of private individuals involved in analyzing a type of software with that vulnerability.
They accessed the Targeted Computer - including the contents of an encrypted volume mounted on it - and viewed some of the images on that device and discovered what they referred to as CSAM. They also created a text file that contained the directories and file name of the CSAM files located in the encrypted volume.
On July 3, 2021, Homeland Security Investigator agents executed a "Remote Search Warrant" and recovered CSAM images, as well as items associated with Remick. 4 days later they executed a search warrant at Remick's residence, finding even more photos on his custom-built computer.
Because of Remick's background in IT - and the fact that he ran his own private consulting business known as vtgeek.com - his finances had "thwarted normal investigative avenues" according to the HSI agents.
