Using Monero as a Dissidant

I've been paying attention to many dissidant groups and individuals over the past decade, with several piquing my interests due to their intelligence, philosophies and skillsets. Over the course of time I have seen many of these dissidants and dissidant groups get shadow-banned, censored, debanked and depersoned because of their worldviews and the reactions from our corrupt governments.

In the past, Gold was used to fund many dissidants and dissidant groups around the world due to its high-value and liquidity across all markets and borders; Today, cryptocurrencies is becoming the more favored form of international payment to people all across the world. But, one of the problems I have seen when it has come to major public-fundraising efforts - efforts for Ukraine, for example - utilized traceable cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Etherium. These mistakes need to be learned from, especially from those who genuinely see themselves as dissidants; privacy MUST be an obligation when it comes to fundraising efforts by all dissidants, not just for those receiving the funds, but also for those who send the funds.

This is where Monero comes in.

Monero provides mandatory privacy for all its users with no exceptions. Learn more about its security features at getmonero.org

Below I will have a simple guide as to how to get Monero for fiat/cash of your choice, some marketplaces/stores you can spend it, and how to convert your Monero back into your fiat/cash of choice.

Step 1 - Getting a Wallet

There are many wallets to choose from for storing and using your Monero. Below is a non-exhaustive list of Monero wallets. Choose one and download it to your device. I will be using my Mysu wallet as an example for the rest of this guide.

Cake Wallet - Mobile
Monerujo - Mobile
Feather - Computer
Mysu - Mobile (Tor browser needed) [RECOMMENDED]
Anonero - Mobile (Tor browser needed) [recommended for experienced users] {Cold-Hot wallet}

Once you have downloaded your wallet of choice, boot up the wallet and choose "create new wallet". You will be given several fields where you can name the wallet and give it a password. Once you have named it and given it a password, the wallet will prime you to note down the mmenomic seed AKA Recovery Seed that you will need in the event of your device carrying your Monero wallet gets destroyed. You can choose between the Polyseed or Legacy mmenomic seed choices; Polyseed is the updated version, and all wallets are incorperating it into their wallets.
You should also note down the View Key, Spend Key, Block Height and the Address of your wallet just incase.
Once you have your wallet created, you will need to wait for it to sync up with the blockchain, the speed of which will depend on your internet connection. If you are using Mysu like myself, you can choose in the app setting to have your wallet automatically connect to Onion Nodes, which increases your privacy.

Step 2 - Getting Monero

There are 3 basic ways in which to get Monero: 1) Buying Monero face to face 2) Buying Monero through a Decentralized Exchange/P2P platform 3) Fundraising/Donations. I will show you how to buy Monero through a P2P platform and how to accept donations.

Buying Monero P2P

There are several ways you can buy Monero online in a P2P fashion, but the most common way is by using Localmonero.

With Localmonero you can use any form of payment that is easiest for you in order to buy some Monero; Cashapp, Chime, Bank transfers, Money by mail, etc.
You will want to set up an account on Localmonero, but don't worry, they don't require an email address.

Once you have your account set up, you will want to link your Monero wallet to your Localmonero account, so you can buy and sell your Monero. Click on your wallet's "Receive" button in order to get your wallet's address.

my Receive section

Click on the "copy" button and add your address to your Localmonero account. Once you have your wallet connected to your Localmonero account, you will be ready to buy and sell Monero.

Here you can choose the method in which you would like to pay, the amount you would like to buy, and the location in which you are located and/or would like to buy Monero in person if you choose.

Each of these ads is an individual vender/seller selling Monero. As you can see, each vender has their asking price per Monero; so be sure to check the current price of Monero before making a large purchase. In each of these ads you can see the Seller, their asking price, their trade limits (minimum and maximum allowed amounts), their amount of trades, their feedback rating and the seller's requirements for the trade. If the ad is good to you, you may hit the "Buy" button and begin the transaction.

Immediately after you hit the "Buy" button you will be taken to the encrypted chat with the buyer. It is common courtesy to immediately let the seller know how much you are buying and by what method you have chosen to use. Depending on your chosen method of payment, the Seller will guide you through the process. For a more detailed breakdown of this process, check out Localmonero's guides.

Once you have been guided through the buying process, it wil take 10 on-chain confirmations before the Monero is sent to your wallet. If there are any problems with this process, you can refer to Localmonero's buy-guide.

Step 3 - Using Monero

After you have received the Monero into your wallet, you will want to spend it on things that are useful to yourself, your group and your people around you. The easiest way to spend your Monero is to spend it in person. Keep an eye out for farm-stands and other local producers who accept Monero.

The more common way in which you can spend your Monero on things and services is by using marketplaces. There are many Dark Net Markets - which I won't cover in this article - but there are a growing number of Clearnet markets as well. For now, I will go into detail of Moneromarket.io.

On Moneromarket you will be able to buy and sell items directly for Monero, with the site taking a small cut ofcourse (5% fee on all items except precious metals and paper cash, 1% on precious metals and paper cash).
Make a profile on Moneromarket, with a burner email if you'd like, and connect your Monero wallet to your profile. If you'd like, you can use their on-site wallet; but it's always recommended to use your own wallets, incase the site were to get hacked somehow.
On this site you can offer your services, buy services and buy/sell legal items to other people anonymously with Monero. If you want a more detailed guide/FAQ, Moneromarket has one provided

There are other markets and stores in which you can spend your monero. Below I will put together a list of directies or stores.

Monerica - Monero Directory
Anonshop - Buy items from Amazon anonymously
MoneroMetals - Buy Gold/Silver with Monero
ShopInBit - European-based
CryptWerk - Monero Directory
MyCompass - Monero Directory
Reflectacles - Anti-Facial Recognition Eyewear
Merceneros - I.T, OpSec, Programming, Editing, etc
MoneroShopping - Buy Anything Anywhere with Monero
BusKill - Deadman Killswitch USB
DigitalAnalogSolutions - Smart Dumb Phones / Degoogled phones

Part 4 - Monero Fundraiser/Donation

The easiest way to receive Monero/XMR donations is to take a screenshot of your wallet's QR code and share it, along with the wallet's address, to any social media site you use. You can add the QR code to your videos and livestreams as well.

If you are looking to incorporate Monero donations into your livestreams, you should check out this Shadowchat guide that JapanAnon from Onionket/Mitra set up (and here is the GitGud respository). Shadowchat will require a VPS if I remember right (I'm not a streamer).

Part 5 - Selling Monero

If you want to sell your Monero back for your choice of fiat cash, you can go back to Localmonero and do the reverse of what you did in order to buy Monero. The only difference is that you will need to have atleast 0.35 XMR/Monero in the Localmonero wallet in order to be able to make "Sell Ads"; this is to ensure that scammers can't spam the ad listings.

As you can see, these are the ad listing of those who would like to buy your Monero. You can choose to sell your Monero to one of these vendors, or you can choose to make your own Sell Ad listing. The process is just the reverse of how you bought Monero, so a detailed explenation would be repetative. If you'd like a detailed explenation, you may refer yourself to their Sell Guide
