Danielle and Brandon Hamalainen were critically injured in a car crash in Fryeburg, Main on 1/30/2024, when a driver who was fleeing police had crashed into their vehicle.
The couple lives in Conway with their 4 children and had gone out to get some errands done on Tuesday.
Police say that the incident started with the report of a driver who was operating erratically at Cumberlands Farms. The pursuit happened when Police tried to approach Kenneth Ellis, 52, where he took off and drove up Route 16 into Maine. In the pursuit, Kenneth Ellis had crashed into several cars - including the car of Danielle and Brandon Hamaleinen - and ended up crashing into a snowbank in fron of the Norway Savings Bank.
Shortly after crashing his truck, Kenneth Ellis gout out of his vehicle and approached a Fryeburg Police Officer who had stopped behind his crashed truck. Ellis was ordered several times to show his hands, and when he eventually did, he brandished a knife; he was then ordered several times to drop the knife while he was still advancing towads the police officer.
Kenneth Ellish was then shot multiple times, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Kathy Rogers-Hamalainen - Danielle's Mother - and her daughter, Jocelyn, had told WMUR that both Danielle and Brandon were brought to the Maine Medical Center with significant brain and spinal injuries; where they are being treated for brain injuries, as well as a myriad of other extensive injuries.
Kathy had said that she was able to visit her daughter and son-in-law a couple times this week, being able to speak directly to her daughter as the doctors investigate the full breadth of her injuries.
"I said, 'Danielle, do you remember what happened?'" Kathy said. "She blinked once, and I said, 'You guys were in a really bad car accident.' You never want to see your child cry, but I was never so happy to see tears coming down because they know she was understanding what I was saying".
Danielle's sister, Jocelyn, said that "Danielle and Brandon are devoted to their children, and she is sure that they will not give up until they can all be together again. They're fighters. They're going to fight for themselves and get home to their kids", Jocelyn said.
